Naming your business is one of the most important steps in getting your business off on the right foot. You need to find a name that resonates with you and makes sense to your target market. Go with something you feel strongly about, because while it’s not the end of the world, having to change your business name down the road is not a good use of time or money. You’ve already spent so much time and money promoting your current business name, you will certainly lose some of that investment and customer recognition with a name change. Plus think all those wasted business cards 🙂 Here is a few tips to get you started on your business naming endeavor.
Brainstorm, Brainstorm, Brainstorm
Start a list of names that describe your business or that you identify with. This is not a list of the perfect name, this is a list of things that pop into your head when you think about your business. What is your business, what will you offer, what do you feel when you think about starting this business, what do you want your business to be, and what does it mean to you? Keep this list available so you can add to it as you think about your name and business, you never know when inspiration might hit. I added to my list for days.
Synonyms & Meanings
If you still are in need of some inspiration, look for synonyms of words you have already written down, and add those to your list. Also consider the meaning of the words you have written down, what do these make you think of? This may bring you cross some words off your existing list, or may lead you to new words you haven’t considered.
Now let’s narrow down that list…
Can you say your business name with ease. Imagine standing in front of a crowd talking about your business, does your name roll off your tongue. Even if you can’t imagine right now, moving from online to in-person, you don’t want a business you can’t talk about.
Ease of Spelling
You don’t want something that is going to be hard for people to spell, as that makes searches for your business harder.
This is something to keep in the back of your mind, when narrowing down your list. Are you going to be a business that really needs searchability as a driver? If your business name is very literal than this will help you out in searches, but you don’t have to go that route in naming. More of a back of the mind kind of thing.
Next is the most important…
Do You Identify With It?
Is it something you identify with. It’s going to be hard to put your heart and soul into a business when you don’t LOVE your name. Go with your gut, go with what makes sense to you and you feel good about. Don’t rush the name, take some time with it. I kept a notebook for a week and jolted down ideas, ALL THE TIME. Talk about it with whomever will listen, say names out loud to yourself, you don’t have to pick a name in one sitting, and in fact it’s good to have a few options.
When you have narrowed your list down you need to…
Hop onto google, and plug that name in. Go to godaddy and plug in what you would want your url to be. Not taken by another business and the url is available, then lucky you, now check out your social media options. You want to go with a name you love, but also one you can have consistent branding of. You may have to go back to your list and rethink your name, if someone else already has it or if the url and social media handles are not available. Don’t worry you will find something that works!!
