Shh, here is the big secret….no one is really paying attention. I use to get social anxiety to social media, I think this is a real thing. I would over-think before commenting or even liking, or even following. Is this person going to think I’m a stalker, are people going to think I’m stupid/lame/weird, am I doing it correctly. It’s something you just have to push yourself to get over. The magic pill to it, is that a. no one is really paying attention b. they forget easily. Social media moves so fast that most of the time people forget LONG LONG before you do. So let it go.
You have to get out there and engage. Most people aren’t judging you, and if they are forget them. They have too much time on their hands if they have time to single you out for a few twitter etiquette breaches. Don’t let imagined judgmentalism, and fear hold you back from putting your business, your passion out there. That’s the thing about social media is that while it can be scary and intimidating, it’s how you are going to find your tribe, you customer, your success. You have to use it to get comfortable with it. The beginning is scary, but it gets easier I promise!! Don’t let your fear hold you back.
Use your voice, like, comment, and post away. Be authentic, not spammy, and you will be just fine. Also, avoid any blog post that is titled the 10 Biggest Mistakes or What You Are Doing Wrong, don’t let someone else set the rules for you. Everyone makes little mistakes along the way. I still do, even when I know better. For example, I joined my first twitter chat in while a few weeks ago, and was hitting reply for all the questions….whoops!
Get out there and see what happens! If you feel like a channel will help promote your business, then don’t wait, sign-up for an account and start figuring it out. We are all still figuring something out or didn’t know something, or there is a new feature we have not caught onto yet.
This month I’m working on trying to be more personal in my writing and social media engagement. Sharing my personal side does not come naturally or easily to me, but I’m trying to show more of my personality as I engage online. See we all have things to work on 🙂
